This functional statement establishes the Quality Management guidelines for the position of Staff Psychiatrist in General Psychiatry in acute inpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry and other medical inpatient (consult) settings. The incumbent, who also serves as a staff physician, reports directly to the Director of Inpatient Mental Health, or designee, who in turn reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Mental Health, Social Work and Homeless Programs, and is responsible for providing psychiatric services to eligible Veterans through the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The functional statement covers Psychiatrists located in the acute inpatient psychiatry and consult setting within VAPAHCS. Functions and/or Scope: Clinical: Evaluation and management of patients; The incumbent will be responsible for the evaluation of patients on the acute inpatient psychiatry units, in the emergency room and will provide consultation to other services in the hospital. The incumbent will also supervise trainees, including but not limited to medical students and residents, in all of these settings. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Instructs other personnel assigned to health care team on preventive medicine programs and other appropriate medical activities and functions. Provides on-call services and other duties as needed. B. Administrative: Serve in hospital committees, such as Medication Management Committee or Pain Committee, and attend all meetings as needed, etc. Supports and enhances VAPAHCS philosophy and goals. Responsible for ensuring Research outcome studies are routinely conducted according to VAPAHCS policies and procedures. C. Other: Education of trainees and staff as required. All other duties as assigned.
